From Frustrated Newbie to Booking Dream Clients: How to Avoid Costly Mistakes

Starting your freelance journey is thrilling, but let’s be honest, it can also feel overwhelming. The competition is fierce, and avoiding mistakes is key to landing those amazing clients.

Been there, fumbled that! But fear not, because I’ve compiled a list of the pitfalls I wish someone had warned me about when I started and how to ensure you don’t fall for them.

Mistake #1: Winging It

Imagine showing up to a shoot with no plan. Yikes! Preparation is your secret weapon.

A Mood Board is Everything: Create a visual mood board. Think Pinterest! It helps you and your client brainstorm ideas for poses, editing styles, and even locations.

Mistake #2: Mismatched Expectations

Ever delivered photos and had a client totally surprised and upset? Awkward! Set clear expectations upfront, regardless of how nice the client is to you.

Client Communication is King: Create a detailed guide that outlines your services and pricing. This ensures everyone’s on the same page and avoids misunderstandings later.

Mistake #3: Undervaluing Your Worth

One of the most common and detrimental mistakes photographers make is undervaluing their work by pricing their services too low, often in an attempt to undercut competition and book more jobs early on. However, this puts you in a difficult position down the line. It’s like digging a pit that you will fall into eventually

When you price yourself too low just to get hired, you are sending the message that your skills and time are not very valuable. Proper pricing research is important from the start. Watch this video on Pricing!

Mistake #4: The Missing Contract

Listen! A verbal agreement is not going to cut it. Contracts protect you and your clients.

Get it in Writing: Use a contract that spells out everything from deadlines to cancellation policies. This, my friend, can be a lifesaver!

Mistake #5: Mind Reading 101 (aka Failing to Understand Your Client)

Clients can’t read minds! Unravel their vision clearly.

Consultation is Key: Have a thorough consultation to understand their goals and the intended use of the photos. Don’t be afraid to ask questions! This is how you get to understand their needs.

Mistake #6: Turning Clients Away

Would you want to work with someone who ghosts you? Definitely not. This is exactly why you can’t afford to take your client service for granted

Respond Promptly, Be Friendly, Be Professional: Always respond to inquiries quickly and treat your clients with respect. Remember, happy clients mean repeat business and referrals!

Mistake #7: Getting Stuck in a Rut

Photography and the creative industry is ever-evolving. Don’t get left behind! Keep your skills up to date.

Embrace Continuous Learning: Invest in workshops, masterclasses, online courses, and stay inspired by studying the work of great artists.

Mistake #8: Hiding Your Talent

The world needs to see your amazing work! Only if your showup

Build Your Online Presence: Create a portfolio website and a solid social media to showcase your unique style and attract your ideal clients.
